Are There Different Types of RV Insurance Policies?
With multiple types of recreational vehicles, it is no wonder that there are also different policies available to suit your specific needs. Knowing the class of your vehicle can help you find the right policy.
For example, travel trailers and pop-up trailers are mostly used for fun and thus may cost less to insure than an RV used for full time living.
Minimum RV Insurance Coverage
Just like with auto insurance, minimum RV insurance requirements vary by state. Generally, states require you to carry a certain amount liability insurance.
In Florida, for example, all RV drivers must carry at least:
-
$10,000 in bodily injury liability per person
-
$20,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
-
$10,000 in property damage liability
Liability works much of the same with RV insurance as it does with auto insurance. There are also higher coverage limits available and other types of policies depending on your RV.
Optional RV Insurance Policies
Coverage that may be available for your toy vehicles, camper trailers or RVs may include:
-
Comprehensive Coverage: Comprehensive coverage provides compensation for damages to the RV caused by fire, wind, hail, lightning, smoke, theft, vandalism and other incidents not involving collision.
-
Collision Coverage: Collision coverage provides compensation for damages to the RV caused by a collision with another vehicle or object.
-
Liability: Liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage the driver may cause someone else while operating the insured RV.
-
Personal Injury Protection: Personal injury protection provides compensation for medical bills the driver and their passengers may face after an accident, no matter who is at fault.
-
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: This insurance provides compensation for damages and injuries that occur in an accident with another driver who is not carrying insurance.
-
Custom Equipment: If you have custom equipment on your RV, it may not be covered under a basic RV insurance policy. Custom equipment coverage can provide compensation of your custom equipment is damaged or ruined.
-
Total Loss Replacement: Total loss replacement coverage may only be available for certain RVs, such as those that area few models old or previously untitled. This coverage allows you to completely replace your RV after a total loss, as opposed to other RV insurance policies that offer actual cash value or agreed value for compensation.
